What is Virechana Therapy?

Virechana therapy is a traditional Ayurvedic detoxification procedure mainly aimed at cleansing the digestive system, particularly the intestines and liver. It is one of the primary Panchakarma therapies in Ayurveda.

Why is Virechana Therapy Recommended?

Pitta aggravation leads to hyperacidity, liver congestion, inflammatory skin diseases, gout, and blood impurities. Virechana eliminates Pitta through the lower GI tract.

Therapeutic Mode of Action

  • Preparation Phase: Internal and external oleation (oil application) and fomentation loosen toxins and strengthen digestive fire (Agni).
  • Administration of Purging Medicine: Administering medicated herbal purgatives (like Triphala, castor oil, or Trivrit) induces gentle, controlled diarrhea.
  • Cleansing Process: Purgative medicines stimulate the intestines to clear out accumulated toxins (Ama) from the liver, gallbladder, and intestines.
  • Detoxification & Rejuvenation: Detoxifies the liver and digestive system, restoring balance and improving metabolic functions.
  • Post-Therapy Care: Specific dietary and lifestyle modifications support recovery and prevent toxin re-accumulation.

Clinical Indications

Virechana Therapy is prescribed following diagnostic evaluation for patients presenting with:

Hyperacidity, GERD & Chronic Indigestion
